Ben says that he forgot that he was supposed to be on Like a Version and "had to cover a popular song, and turned on my ipod and this was the most recently listened to song and found some drummers in the studio" (11/5/06 in Columbia, MO).... and tada, here we are. Really unique and nice cover. I agree that his singing wasn't very pleasant though. And his attempt at being creative at the end with the phone was nice, but "Macerena"??? No. Nice idea, wrong song. Kind of ruined it. But overall still very nice.

No, he did screw up at 3:07. He started to sing "everything looks perfect". He looked at the guys at 3:05. Its still a great cover though. Ben Folds is one of my favorites.

What it comes down to is what kind of music fan you are - Postal Service's studio version is polished, electronic, and highly produced-sounding. Ben, especially live, has his sincere slightly-off-pitch way of singing, and there's no electronic trickery going on. Anything Ben plays, he could play in your living room on your piano and it would sound the same. It's a very different philosophy than Postal Service and other groups like them, and a matter of personal taste.
