"a new day yesterday" from 1969 by Jethro Tull is the first metal song. Look it up. Tony Iommi was associated with Jethro Tull before Black Sabbath, so that's probably partly where he got his inspiration.

I can't believe this happend in 1970, I am 23 years old and i'm still listening to them. I dont speak english very good but what i am trying to say is that their sound in this song is so contemporary. You don't have to down-tune to play metal music, and Iommi didn't down-tune 3 semi-steps until Master of Reality, the 3rd Sabbath record. On Black Sabbath and Paranoid I think he had standard tuning.

A new day yesterday would fit great on Black Sabbath (the album). Anyway, I'm not questioning that they defined metal as we know it, but I think there's a difference between inventing and defining. And either way, Dazed and Confused by Led Zeppelin is very similar to this song, I think. So I don't think that Black Sabbath invented metal, but they defined the genre on Paranoid and Master of Reality, whereas bands like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull only made like one or two metal songs.
