No he wasn't. He often admitted that he only knew a couple of scales. He was easily bored by music theory. Whereas Randy was schooled in theory from a young age. This is not to detract from Dime at all. He is still my favorite guitarist of all time.

Hendrix, Randy Rhodes, Eddie VH, Uli Roth and Jimmy Page are my favorite guitarists ever. I like Satriani and Malmsteen technically but have a hard time getting into their music. I think Page's live Dazed and Confused from the remastered Song Remains the Same is as good as anything I've heard. Crazy Train...one of the best metal songs of all time.
