Vinny Appice vs. Tommy Aldridge

Video by: metallicaddict13
Video Description:
Vincent "Vinny" Appice (born September 13, 1957 in Brooklyn, New York) is a rock drummer, best known for his work with the bands Dio and Black Sabbath. He is the younger brother, by 11 years, of rock drummer Carmine Appice, who was in Vanilla Fudge and Cactus. He is currently involved in Heaven and Hell and 3 Legged Dogg.
Early years
Vinny took up the drums aged 9, taking lessons from the same teacher as Carmine had had. At the age of 16, Vinny and his band BOMF met John Lennon at The Record Plant in NYC, which led to Vinny appearing on several Lennon projects. He then recorded and toured with Rick Derringer on Derringer (1976), Sweet Evil (1977) and Derringer Live (1977), before forming his own band Axis, releasing one album, It's A Circus World (1978).
[edit] The Black Sabbath and Dio years
Appice joined Black Sabbath in 1980 during the Heaven and Hell tour, and later appeared on the albums Mob Rules (1981) and the album recorded on that tour, Live Evil (1982). In late 1982, before Live Evil had even hit the shelves, he had left Sabbath with vocalist Ronnie James Dio, and formed the band Dio. He appeared on the Dio albums Holy Diver (1983), The Last in Line (1984), Sacred Heart (1985), Intermission (1986), and Dream Evil (1987). In December 1989 Appice left Dio for reasons somewhat unclear.
In 1990 Appice joined World War III and the band released an album. In 1992 Appice returned to Black Sabbath, with Ronnie James Dio, for the Dehumanizer album and tour. When Black Sabbath, with Rob Halford singing instead of Ronnie James Dio, opened as special guest on Ozzy's (supposed) final two solo shows in Costa Mesa, CA in November 1992, Appice still sat in the drum-stool. Thereafter, he rejoined Dio and is present on Strange Highways (1994), Angry Machines (1996) and Inferno - Last in Live (1998).
On the 1998 Black Sabbath tour he replaced original drummer Bill Ward, who was absent while he recovered from a heart-attack. Ward returned to the band in 1999. As of 2007, he is taking part in a reunion with Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Ronnie James Dio to tour under the name "Heaven and Hell" during 2007. Initially Bill Ward was going to be the drummer for this project but once again Appice will be taking over from Ward, as Ward had stated he did not want to tour with the band.
Tommy Aldridge (born on August 15, 1950, in Jackson, Mississippi), is a veteran heavy metal and hard rock drummer who has pioneered double bass drumming. Tommy is noted for his work with numorous bands and vocalists, most notable being Ozzy Osbourne, Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake.
Aldridge taught himself how to play drums and was inspired by rock legends Cream, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and drummers Joe Morello and John Bonham. Throughout his career Tommy has been regarded as a double bass drumming pioneer.
Career
In the 1970s, Aldridge joined up and coming rockers Black Oak Arkansas and recorded nine albums with them between 1972 and 1976. He also undertook long tours around the US with the band.
He spent 1978 to 1981 signed with Canadian blues-rock guitarist Pat Travers, and recorded five albums with him. Aldridge was then offered a place in Ozzy Osbourne's band, which he accepted. Playing alongside Ozzy and guitarist Randy Rhoads, the line up is preserved on 1987's Tribute. After Rhoads' death the band continued to record, producing a live album in 1982 called Speak of the Devil and a studio album, Bark at the Moon in 1983, after which Aldridge left the group.
Aldridge joined Gary Moore to record Dirty Fingers in 1984 before accepting an offer from David Coverdale of Whitesnake. However, before joining Whitesnake for the "Whitesnake 1987" tour he joined forces with longtime friend and bass player Rudy Sarzo to form "Project Driver" a Shrapnel Records band which not only failed commercially but was a project he personally financed and cost him his marriage. He was too late to appear on the successful Whitesnake 1987 album, but has toured with the band extensively to this day. He appears on Slip of the Tongue, released in 1989 which was less successful and resulted in the group breaking up a year later.
After Whitesnake, he played in the band Manic Eden, with his former Whitesnake bandmates, Adrian Vandenberg and Rudy Sarzo. The line-up also included former Little Caesar vocalist Ron Young.
During the 1990s Tommy worked with numourous acts ranging from Motörhead to Ted Nugent whilst continuing to tour and record live albums.
Since 2002 Aldridge has toured with Whitesnake alongside David Coverdale (vocals), Doug Aldrich (guitar), Reb Beach (guitar), Marco Mendoza/Uriah Duffy (bass) and Timothy Drury (keyboards).
As of 2007, Tommy is touring with Thin Lizzy alongside John Sykes, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza.
Aldridge plays Yamaha drums, a company he has been with for more than 20 years and uses Paiste cymbals.[1]

Fuckin' Tommy ... ( 1 month ago by pizzacrime)
Fuckin' Tommy Aldridge was great. What a sound. Why don't we ever hear good solos at live rock shows anymore? Maybe we here a cool percussion-infused 2 or 3 person bit at a Slipknot concert, but nothing with so much expression like Tommy or Vinny, Bill Ward, Neal Peart or dare I say Peter Chris (don't shoot me)? Seriously though. These guys were inspiration to the other guys in their bands to come up with their own wild shit. What happened? Where is our next great drummer of the era? Who is he?
Oh yeah, I can't ... ( 1 month ago by pizzacrime)
Oh yeah, I can't believe I forgot him, John Bonham too. Well I might as well throw in Keith Moon as well, fuckin' guy had so much damn energy. He floored people I heard back then. Bonham was SO HEAVY, no one ever heard such a heavily laced drum sound before. The guy was so smooth, so heavy, so CLEVER.
