here is David Rudder's exhilerating performance of his hit "Calypso Music" at the 1987 Calypso Monarch Finals. This performance did in fact beat out Black Stalin's "Bun Dem", however he was edged out by Stalin (due to the 1st round performance) and had to settle for 2nd position. Rudder walked out arm in arm with Stalin when Stalin was announced Calypso Monarch. Talk about graciously accepting defeat. However this was his last ever appearance as a contestant in the Calypso Monarch Finals. He is and always will be a King in the eyes of trinis everywhere...

By the way, 'Calypso Rising' was originally written and sung by Gregory Ballentine (GB). It's one of David's few covers.

GB did sing Calypso Rising (Taking off dat ole time style putting on a brand new smile...) Calypso Music however, was originally sung by David Rudder is a completely different arrangement with its own lyrics and being performed here. Clearly, if he is at the Dimanche Gras final and performing the song, the piece is a new one and not a cover of an older tune. Please brush up on your skills, sit back and enjoy the music, but do not assume the posture of an authority of the artform.

David Rudder self-identifies as a Calypsonian, and that is what he is. He is a versatile Calypsonian that may adapt styles from other genres, but he is in essense a Calypsonian. Our heritage and tradition makes us inherently multi-layered - not folk singers-DUH!

well he sings clearly enough so you can decipher it. i know these lyrics by heart. i'm almost certain if you google "david rudder" and "calypso music" you should find it. oh, it's also on the sleeve of his triple CD - "no restriction live." u could probably go to a music store and get the lyrics off the sleeve/book.

but wasn't the north stand more on fire for "bun dem", essentially doing the trick for stalin? "bun dem" received a crazy reception, and is a classic, but this song will easily outlast and outclass most of the others.
