Wouldn't the magnetic lasso tool work just as well? I'm a newbie and still learning but I noticed the magnetic tool can almost do what he just did. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but nice tutorial.

there are different ways to do this. He did it with the pen to show how it works. The pen is more complicated and is necessary when the lasso tool won't work as good.
