If a flash went off and you werent already covered you'd be blinded and burnt, they aint no chance of surviving, but suppose at least they tried to make people feel better when it was pretty pointless. Least they tried lol

The initial light is just normal light, afterward waves of STRONG UV radiation come, which is 100x stronger then the normal UV rays from the sun. After that comes a shock wave which can throw cars and destroy buildings, but you still might survive.

South Park and Fallout made fun of this, but they are correct: There is no way to cover from Thermonuclear weapon. You die or you don't die, but indeed it's better to duck and cover than to yell and run around..
Bomb shelters is the answer, I say. In my country there are hundreds of bomb shelters, which are huge help in such situation. Compare to "Vaults" of the Fallout game series. It's like Kngiht #1 is hitting Knight #2 with a mace, but "2 take cover behind your shield and survives.
