I had to learn by ear when I first experimented with tuning. I use to listen to the music and tune down till I got as close to the tone as I could. It is not that hard to learn on your own and when you have played as long as I have or people in general you can tune it by ear and be pretty much dead on. Buy a really nice tuner it will help fine tune also.

a lot of metal tabs are written in drop d or drop c tuning, it will usually say up top what tuning to use.
