The problem sir is that the piece you are listening to here isn't called Agnus Dei really. The origins of this piece is called Adagio for strings... the composer had no religious intent for this music. Someone else took the piece and tagged the beautiful words of the Agnus Dei on it... But Barber never intended the Adagio to become a vocal piece when he wrote it.

Very true when he fist composed it. He wrote it first as one movement of a string quartet in the 1930s, then as a version for string orchestra. But Barber himself did arrange it much later (late 1960s) for choir using the Agnus Dei text. All versions are just incredible and as you mentioned the words are beautiful - together they are a wonderful match.

True, but he did compose this paticular version himself in the 1960's. He took what he created and changed it himself. No one else came up with this version. It was all done by Barber.
