a friend of my dad's turned me on to a recording of Les McCann and Eddie Harris live at the Montreux Jazz Festivel he told me they donated the proceeds of their gig to an orginization that helped draft dodgers during the Vietnam war. Is this true? There was a independent radio station in San Francisco that was bought out in a corporate take over set to become Disney radio the last song they played was "Compared to What"

I never knew there was video for this. It's well recorded and a classic from the album "Swiss Movement." The only problem is that it cuts off before the end of the song. Does a full video of this song exist? By the way, the personnel: Eddie Harris, sax; Bennie Bailey, trpt; Don Dean, drums; Leroy Vinegar, bass; and of course, Les McCann.
Best,
Doug

Les McCann and ... ( 6 months ago by SoulTooSoul)
Les McCann and Eddie Harris were both well respected musicians. When they collaberated on the live album, Swiss Movement, they hit the lotto. It was jazzy, funky, and soulful. It had a real gospel feel. It was earthy and militant. The lyrics were a challenge to the status quo. They spoke of the contradictions in the world. It was the common man's manifesto. The album remains a classic.

yowzah! I just saw Les McCann yesterday at the San Jose festival yesterday. Javon Jackson was on sax and Lonnie Smith on Hammond B3. He ripped the place up with this. The audience sang all the "compared to what"s. The lyrics (esp., "the president's go his war...") still ring true -- I guess that's both good and bad,
good in that we still have these songs to raise our spirits. Like Pete Townsend once said, music won't solve out problems but it does help us to dance all over them. I was dancin'!
