patton was a great. ...( 9 months ago by yuriyepgrav)
patton was a great. dont get me wrong. but he would have hated how the world is today. how wars are run today. but his resolution to the war in iraq is one that has been spouted for a long time: nuke em. kill them all. that is how you have peace in the middle east, have no-one living left there, as an example to the others. at least, that is the patton awnser. basically. he would have united the world... for good or ill, he would have. if he had not been killed.

Yup. You lost, accept it. War is not, and never will be about who kills the most amount of people. "Americans love the sting of battle" - How true.

It's a good point, ...( 8 months ago by mencken)
It's a good point, but they didn't lose any of the battles there, and there is a huge distinction there. Say what you want, but they did learn quickly how to fight stand-up wars and have fought them extremely well after losing the pacifist bent they had up till the Jackson presidency. They tend to fight quite effectively, and this speech does rather seem to fit their character. I'm not saying there are no negative parts to it, I'm just saying it makes them really nasty, effective opponents.

There are people who return threw the ages leading others into battle.Patton was one of them."whispered upon winds of time, I shall return and lead you all to victory" and when he does I want him on my side.

its worth googling for the REAL transcript of pattons speach... there are differences and alot more cursing... pattons wife tried to not let the speach get released because she said it was private between patton, and his men who were going to die in battle... he was a true leader... from the FRONT.

Good old Patton. A bad guy who happened to be on the good side. Damn good thing he died when he did, or we'd probably have wound up in a nuclear war with the Russians before 1960. Great commander, sure, but what a dumbass.

well, what exactly would u call vietnam---a shimmering success?? i just remember it as the WAR THAT WOULD NEVER END or THE WAR IN YOUR LIVING ROOM. 57,000 americans died----and for what?? this war did far more than anything i can ever imagine---watergate included---to bring down the moral of america---and divided this country something terribly. i remember 1967 fremshman year we had this guest speaker giving a speech entitled "alternatives to the draft." good ol' lbj & robt mcnamara

This and the speech by Al Pacino at the end of Scent of a Woman are the absolute two best verbal "kick ass" speeches to ever be filmed and put in a movie. Different audiences, but they were both filled with hard, fast character and firmness. Scott and Pacino were fabulous.
Great commander, sure, but what a dumbass.
