I generally reguard mainstream as being well known, or simular to many others. Opeth is totally individual. There are very few bands that have a simular sound or talent.

BongBreaker you are wrong. Actually their inspirations are Morbid Angel, Emperor, Celtic Frost, Bathory, early Metallica, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and lots of obscure prog/psych rock bands. They have nothing to do with Stockholm scene at all and nothing to do with melodic death metal.

Yeah I know thay are from Stockholm. After clicking "post Coment" I realised what I wrote. Lol. ;-) But Stockholm scene is totaly different more death metal or doom metal oriented and there ale olso great prog rock bands. I hear very big differance between melodic death metal and progressive death metal. So I still think you are wrong. Melodic death metal are influenced more by heavy metal bands I guess and bands like Opeth are influenced by prog rock bands. To me it's very big difference.

Well just because they are from Stockholm doesn't mean they are part of the Stockholm scene. They guy asked where they are from. I replied with the correct answer. And just because they are influenced by progressive and psych rock bands doesn't mean that's their genre. Some of the most brutal death metal bands are inspired by bad punk music. I thought Blackmore/Deep Purple were Akerfeldt's biggest influence? It makes sense since they were both heavy and progressive especially in that era. Actually Opeth sometimes reminds me of old Genesis when Steve Hackett played guitar for them in the 70's. Peace
