We went to Norway to interview Gaahl, lead singer of the band Gorgoroth. Gaahl really believes in this whole ideology behind what he's doing—he's not just some rockstar fronting a band. The thing with Black Metal is, in Norway, everybody is exactly the same. There's nothing to rebel against, because everybody's really well off. It's one of the richest countries in Europe. There is no lower class, it's like middle-class white kids everywhere—no one has anything to complain about. And he's this sort of eccentric figure amidst this sea of contentment and sameness. The way I see it is, in America you have guys like 50 Cent who are supposed to be the "villain." Kids like him cause they're parents hate him, and that's basically what Gaahl is. He's their musical villain so to speak. But there's a lot of different sides to the scene.

mmm... i don't think the end silence of ghaal have some kind of sense... he's only unable to speak at a deepest level. The journ. answer was a question that anyone watching tv on that moment should have made. Where's his 'intellect'? He's speaking like a first year philosophy student... he read too much Nietszche... european (and usa of course) cities\universities are full of people like him. This happen when you ask to a metalhead to speak about life... he only can show his one.

Its not fake when Gaahl retains stillness. You can tell because the candle doesn't change. It doesn't move very much at all throughout the interview. I've seen Gaahl do something like that before as well. Trust me, he is capable of it.

I loved that interview. He basically told them he didn`t like followers, people who expect something from him. What do they do? They ask him to "guide" them when they are told they ask all the wrong questions. Thats just so fucking ignorant and downright disrespectful. He told them what he thought of them by shutting up and not talking again. His way of telling them that they should not just listen but also try to COMPREHEND what he was saying. They didnt. The trip? A walk in the park, ffs!

Here is what I think of the interviewers: they think they are so damn cool, being on youtube and all. Still they contribute NOTHING to music and even less to society. Their work is as meaningful as a fotball made of glass. They pretend to be in to music but they are really only in to themselves. Trying to interview Gaahl was too much for them, as he is honest and doesn`t take 2 cents to let them know that. Gaahl was too polite to them, imho.

This whole series was amazing. In all honesty, I had been curious about the black metal scene for a while, and having heard of Gorgoroth and Gaahl before, I really enjoyed watching this. I was seriously intimidated by the whole scene, understandably. After watching this, I really have a new appreciation for it. Behind all of the make-up and satanic imagery is an INCREDIBLY polite, understanding, and intelligent man. The interviewers were disrespectful, but other than that, this was amazing.

To the credit of one of the journalists, Peter Beste, he has contributed to the Black Metal scene with his documentary photography book - True Norwegian Black Metal. I'd like to think that his inspiration for the book was more then just fame and glory. Judging from the voice it was most likely him who asked that question, but you have to understand they were drinking and also that he deeply admires Gaahl. He was just getting too passionate during the interview.
