Well I learned to play the guitar before I even knew what guitar hero was. I like guitar hero, but it's nothing like the real thing. If you like guitar hero or rock band and decide to take up the real thing, then great. But be warned, it's much harder.

guitar hero and rock band is fucking retarded i picked up bass and i maybe played guitar once in my life it literally requires no skill and all you do is press fucking buttons i'm pretty sure i'm a better bassist than you'll ever be because i don't base my skill on pressing fucking colored buttons and having to look at fake tabs on the tv (or even real tabs for that matter) so you just keep playing rock band and try to be a bass god like john myung

Well, I've been a fan of Joh Petrucci for about 2 years now, and personally, I didn't think that D.T was too great, and I thought he should have stayed solo, but then I got introduced to this song by guitar hero 4, and it blew me away. Oh, and yeah, I have been playing guitar long before I have had guitar hero or even considered getting it, and I believe if you play G.H. thats fine, but don't fuckin show off about you being good pressing little colored buttons

Also, if you start playing an instrument because of guitar hero or rock band, then chances are you were never really into an instrument like drums/bass/guitar to begin with, and chances are that you are going to quit (like many people I know) and what are you going to tell your friends/family about you playing a guitar? for all u pansy-ass purist wannabes bashing guitar hero, im glad games like these are giving a chance for the youth of today to experience real kick ass music. would you rather have a whole new generation just listening to pure crap like black eyed peas etc well do you? i've loved heavy rock music since i was in high school, before the days of g.h. (im 30 now). but im also a gamer, and if it weren't for g.h. i would never have heard of excellent bands like kansas (im asian).

i started guitar bc gH got me into music, but after i started to play i didnt like guitar hero because it took all the hard work out of guitar and people dont realize that, then i found out about great bands just from curiosity, but id say that 90% of kids who play that game download the songs on the game, 10% might look into other songs and bands, and then 20% of those kids will pick up a guitar and try to learn, and 30% of those guitar players will acually pursue the insturment and be good

many bands are successful without being mainstream is what I am saying. but I don't want the mainstream media to make them sell out. It is somewhat selfish to say I don't want them to be huge but so many bands go mainstream and then lose what made them worth listening to. And since you asked: My dad got me to listen to prog bands like Yes. I started finding out about more progressive rock and metal bands and came across Dream Theater.
