Malakian is currently recording the self-titled debut album for Scars on Broadway. "Ghetto Blaster Rehearsals" was supposedly a leak of new Scars on Broadway material, but in a 2007 letter, Daron announced on his website that these tracks weren't in any way affiliated to Scars on Broadway as it exists today and that the music is from a disbanded project from four years ago (most likely the one that featured the line-up with Casey Chaos). At this time, the only confirmed members were Malakian on vocals and guitar with System of a Down member John Dolmayan on drums.
On March 14, 2008, Scars launched an advertising contest challenging fans to post the Scars on Broadway countdown banner on the best websites they can find and submit screenshots. The prize is a cymbal signed by John and Daron.
Scars on Broadway played their first live show April 11, 2008 at the Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles, CA. They have also confirmed to be playing with Metallica at KFMA Day 2008 in Tucson, AZ[2]. On January 22, 2008 Scars on Broadway were announced to be performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 26, 2008[3]. On May 17th of that year, the band also performed at the sixteenth annual KROQ Weenie Roast, along with Atreyu, Bad Religion, Flobots, Flogging Molly, Metallica, The Offspring, Pennywise, The Raconteurs, Rise Against and Seether. Additional tour dates were announced on their official website on the 30th of May [3].
On May 2, 2008, Scars announced on their official website that their debut album, Scars on Broadway, will be released on the 28th and 29th of July.
On what direction the debut album will take, Malakian states: "It will probably be something electronic mixed in with traditional Armenian and thrash, death, black, and doom metal influences. When the music comes out, it will still be structured, just like System of a Down's music is."'.
In a recent interview, Malakian stated that the music will be influenced by Classic rock acts such as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Neil Young, and Roxy Music. He also stated that he shifted his songwriting from SOAD's frazzled metal to more song-based work, inspired by Neil Young and David Bowie.
"I don't feel we're the mosh-pit band," says Malakian. "That's just where I'm comfortable as a writer right now," he said, hinting at the band's rock over metal music approach.

Daron, in a recent interview, has said that the sound will be influenced by classic rock such as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Neil Young, and Roxy Music. Malakian has shifted his songwriting away from SOAD's frazzled metal to more song-based work. "I don't feel we're the mosh-pit band," says Malakian. Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan have been writing and rehearsing new material and plan to begin writing their debut album. According to a source on blabbermouth.net, Scars on Broadway began recording on September 27, 2007. The album is confirmed to be produced by Malakian and Rick Rubin. For the recording of their debut album, the two will be "accompanied by some great musicians"[3]. Daron has teamed up with Garrett Keetley in the studio to help him with the recording[citation needed]. According to the Scars on Broadway website, as of December 6th, 2007, the drum tracks for the album had been finished and the band is moving into the next stage of recording. The album will be released on July 29th and contain 15 tracks[4].
