OMG, lol. This is NWOBHM. They always were regarded as this and always will be. They had a song / album called black metal but it wasn't the name of their genre. The genre came from Death Metal groups going for a darker sound. Venom = NWOBHM. Mayhem, Immortal etc = Black Metal (as genre). Black metal like its predecessors Thrash Metal, Death Metal & Doom Metal all take major influence from NWOBHM such as Venom.

Back in those days you had Heavy Metal and Punk Rock. Thrash was a form of Heavy Metal started with Metallica and other similar bands from the US Bay area. Nowadays you get sooo many genres it is silly. Black Metal just meant "Satanic Lyrics" and White Metal was the opposite with Lyrics of a Biblical nature.

I think Venom is better than Maiden, because Venom use satanic lyrics and the songs are more powerful, and thrash, speed, black. Maiden tried in 1982 to be satanic with The number of the beast, but was more Heavy Metal. This is just my opinion, but I listen also Venom and Maiden.
