I think it's because back then, the singers could never actually sing live. On any TV shows or anything like that, it was pre-recorded even if the singer wanted to do it live. I am basing this off of what I know about the Jackson 5, as all of their early performances on TV, they were not allowed to (of they didn't have the tech with little microphones) to do it live. Think of this as a music video, where they may really be singing, but what you hear is pre-recorded for the most part.

I first heard of Neil Sadaka when I saws him on tv in the 70's and his son inroduced him as his dad. He sang the second version of his song. I heard the first version of that song on an oldies station in 1984 or 1985. I also heard "Bad Blood" and "The Hungry Years" in the 70's.
