The door idea is interesting, but has flaws. If the battery dies and you're in the vehicle, you're trapped unless it has a crank or emergency release. Because it has motors that lower the door, it will require more maintenance in upkeep. Eventually, the doors may even break and who's going to fix it? I'm also concerned over side crash strength of these doors. Slide up manual gull wings (which eliminate the above issues) are a better solution in addressing the same issues.

That's probably why it was a prototype and never manufactured in a production car. =)

DeLorean used manual gull-wings, like the Mercedes C-111 and the DeTomasa Pantera. The windows didn't open all the way, but at least you got arm rests.

That's the same problem public transit buses had. Since the motor needs to be running for the doors to open and close. The fix? Manual release handles, such as your garage door would have. It would require about the same amount of work as actually opening the door, but would only be used rarely.
